X has uncovered a network of 200,000 accounts linked to China that were used to manipulate public debate regarding AI data centers. While the majority of the accounts' activities remain undisclosed, 200 of them specifically targeted American energy policy by posting AI-generated images and text. These posts claimed that data centers drive up household electricity costs and strain local power grids. The platform confirmed it has suspended the accounts involved for violating its Authenticity policy. OpenAI previously reported that similar China-linked accounts used ChatGPT to generate content criticizing US tech policies and specific energy infrastructure.
