Xbox Implements 3,200 Job Cuts in Major Division Restructuring
· World · The Guardian, The Independent
Microsoft's gaming division announced plans to cut 3,200 jobs throughout the financial year to 2027, with 1,600 roles eliminated immediately on 6 July. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma informed employees of the restructuring worldwide via an email titled Resetting Xbox. Affected staff at North American studios, including Bethesda Game Studios Austin and ZeniMax Online Studios, received meeting invitations for virtual calls where studio managers read prepared statements and announced immediate loss of access to internal messaging channels. Because Bethesda and ZeniMax are unionised, bargaining committees are currently negotiating severance packages and benefits. Affected US workers will continue to receive pay until 4 September under the federal WARN Act.
Why it matters
The layoffs and subsequent union negotiations set a critical precedent for labor rights and job security within major game development studios.
