Yemen’s Taiz faces deadly siege, as Shabwah death toll rises

· World · Al Jazeera, The Hindu, Reuters

The United Nations has warned that the siege on Taiz has cut humanitarian supplies to the Yemeni city, leaving inhabitants without food and essentials. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk said the Houthis, who have surrounded Taiz, must immediately allow aid to enter or risk a catastrophe. The Houthis' closure of the only supply route linking Taiz to Aden is blocking aid and multiplying commodity prices amid shortages. Continued fighting in Taiz governorate has killed at least 32 civilians between August 1 and October 19, including 14 children. Yemen's internationally recognised government has appealed to the UN to lift the blockade, warning more than 4 million people are threatened. The UN World Food Programme warned that road closures have cut off 800,000 people from life-saving assistance, the vast majority in Taiz.

Why it matters

Civilians in Taiz face immediate danger as blocked aid multiplies commodity prices and fighting kills dozens, threatening over 4 million people in the besieged city.
