Yemeni government forces retake Mokha port as Operation Yemen Dawn expands
· World · BBC News
Yemeni pro-government forces, backed by Saudi Arabia, have recaptured the Red Sea port city of Mokha and secured Bab al-Mandab Strait following a major offensive against Houthi militants. The military said National Shield, Giants Brigades and Tihama Resistance captured Mokha on Monday with Saudi air support, having also seized Dhubab airport 45km south and besieged Houthi fighters in the nearby town. Saudi-led coalition fighter jets provided round-the-clock air support, destroying 324 high-value targets since the offensive began. Saudi air strikes in Sanaa killed a schoolgirl and a woman in the Sanhan and Saawan districts. Houthi-run media denied government advances in Dhubab, while Houthi officials condemned Saudi strikes as dozens of massacres.
Why it matters
The offensive risks further displacement and civilian casualties in Yemen, while the Houthi retaliation against Saudi Aramco facilities threatens wider Gulf oil supplies and regional stability. The conflict's expansion toward the capital Sanaa could deepen the humanitarian crisis.
