YSRCP MP Avinash Reddy detained ahead of Andhra civic poll nominations

· India · Indian Express, NDTV

Andhra Pradesh Police detained Kadapa MP Y S Avinash Reddy of the YSR Congress Party on Thursday to prevent clashes with Telugu Desam Party and Jana Sena candidates during civic poll nominations. The police whisked him away from the Kadapa YSRCP central office as he prepared to accompany party candidates. The Lok Sabha MP's detention comes amid allegations of intimidation and disruptions during local body election nominations. Elections to 10,488 Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies seats are scheduled for November 3 across 659 mandals. Additionally, several YSRCP leaders including former minister S Sailajanath have been placed under house arrest in Anantapur.

Why it matters

The detention of a sitting MP and the house arrest of YSRCP leaders risk disrupting the filing of nomination papers for over 10,000 civic body seats, potentially delaying or reshaping the November 3 election schedule.
