Zelensky speaks to US envoys as Trump lashes out
· World · Hindustan Times, The Hindu
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on Sunday to ease tensions amid the war with Russia. Donald Trump accused Zelensky of not wanting to end the conflict and claimed he was using attacks on Russian diesel refineries to hurt global markets, including in the United States. Zelensky said a lot depended on the US position but stressed the war must end and Ukraine was ready to work constructively with all partners. He discussed US Patriot air defence system deliveries as Kyiv struggles to counter Russian missiles. Zelensky also said he was thankful the US resumed intelligence sharing after a pause that left Ukraine vulnerable. The conversation occurred as both sides struck each other's energy sites, with Moscow leaving thousands without power and Kyiv launching its largest drone attack on Saint Petersburg since 2022.
Why it matters
Ukraine's ability to defend itself against Russian missiles depends on continued US military and intelligence support, which remains uncertain under Trump's shifting stance. European allies are also concerned that US policy may tilt toward Moscow, complicating efforts to end the war.
