Zuckerberg bets $100 billion on AI with second-guessing
· Technology · Times of India, NDTV
Mark Zuckerberg revealed he put a $100 billion cheque in the hands of Meta's highest-paid employee Alexandr Wang and bluntly asked: 'Are you sure this is going to work?' The Scale AI founder, who now runs Meta Superintelligence Labs, admitted that towards the end of 2025 he had little more than a vibe report and some plots to back up the investment. Meta CFO Susan Li warned Wang that a failed AI model would hit hard financially, telling him if it doesn't work it is going to be really, really bad in financial terms. Meta acquired a 49% stake in Scale AI for $14.3 billion in June 2025, reportedly paying Wang around $5 billion as part of the deal. Wang's lab has since unveiled Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full, the most capable AI models to come out of his lab so far. The admission comes as Meta's stock spent much of the year near the bottom of the megacap pack after the lukewarm reception of Muse Spark.
Why it matters
The $100 billion gamble on AI determines whether Meta can compete in the global AI race; a failure would devastate Meta's finances while success could reshape the company's product lineup and market position.
